Credit card rental car insurance in Canada

The rental counter is where this benefit gets decided, usually in under a minute, while an agent quotes a daily rate for a waiver you may already hold. The answer is in your certificate of insurance, and it turns on three things that have nothing to do with the size of the coverage: what you are renting, how long for, and what the vehicle is worth.

Which credit cards cover a rental car?

The vehicle type is matched against each certificate’s own exclusion clause, and every clause is quoted in full further down this page. A match means the document names that class of vehicle, not that a claim would be refused: whether a clause defeats a particular claim is a question for the insurer. Seven certificates exclude “vans (except as defined below)” and define the exception in text this page does not hold, so a minivan on those cards is flagged for checking rather than answered.

The value cap is the column most likely to matter and the least likely to be checked. It runs from $65,000 to $100,000 across these cards, and it is measured against the vehicle, not against the repair. A mid-size SUV booked on a card capped at $65,000 can sit outside the waiver before you have left the lot.

Rental length varies far less: 48 consecutive days on 47 cards, and 31 days on 3 cards. The allowance is per rental rather than per trip.

Which vehicles are excluded?

A card can cover the rental and still exclude the vehicle you booked. Of the 50 certificates here that list excluded categories, 40 name trucks or pick-ups and 40 name vans. Several go further and exclude any vehicle that can be reconfigured into a pick-up truck, along with off-road vehicles, campers, trailers, motorcycles and limousines.

The clauses are reproduced word for word rather than summarised, because they are drawn narrowly and several carve an exception straight back in. A certificate that excludes vans in one clause readmits mini-vans in the next, and a paraphrase loses exactly the distinction a reader needs.

Where does the coverage apply?

Territory wording differs more than the dollar figures do. Some certificates describe the coverage as applying worldwide where local law permits. Others describe it in terms of driving across provincial and state boundaries within Canada and the United States. One names Australia, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland and Costa Rica as places where the rental agency is required by law to provide the collision coverage in the price of the rental, which changes what the card is being asked to do.

These are quoted rather than reduced to a yes or no. The difference between “anywhere in the world except where prohibited” and a clause describing Canadian and American boundaries is the difference between a covered rental in Portugal and an uncovered one.

What the certificate asks you to do

The coverage is conditional on what happens at the counter, and the conditions are not the same on every card. 12 of the certificates here state that the cardholder must decline the rental agency’s own collision damage waiver, which is the step that puts the card’s coverage in force. Accepting the agency waiver on those cards can leave you paying for cover you already had.

Certificates also set a requirement about how the rental is paid for, and the wording varies between charging the full cost of the rental to the card and charging some part of it. That condition, and who besides the cardholder is covered to drive, are stated on each card’s own page alongside the certificate link.

None of this is third-party liability insurance. The certificates cover damage to or theft of the rental vehicle itself, and several say so in as many words. Liability for injury to other people or damage to their property is a separate question and these documents do not answer it.
