Travel insurance

The Platinum Travel Visa includes basic travel protections. There is no trip cancellation, trip interruption, or emergency medical coverage. Coverage included:

  • Flight / trip delay: up to $500
  • Lost baggage: up to $1,000
  • Rental car collision / damage
  • Common carrier accident: up to $500,000
  • Hotel / motel burglary: up to $2,500
  • Emergency travel assistance services

For comprehensive travel insurance including emergency medical and trip cancellation, the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite at $139 includes a full coverage package at the same price point as the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite.

Who it suits

The Platinum Travel Visa is a reasonable choice for cardholders who book travel through Expedia For TD regularly but do not meet the income requirement for the Visa Infinite. The 4.5x on groceries and dining is meaningfully higher than the no-fee Rewards Visa, and the 1.5x base rate on all spending is better than the no-fee card’s 1x. The $89 annual fee is recovered quickly at moderate spend levels relative to the no-fee card’s earn rate.

For anyone who qualifies for the First Class Travel Visa Infinite, the $50 fee difference buys considerably more: a $100 annual travel credit, 8x on Expedia For TD versus 6x, lounge access, and full travel insurance. At the same $139 fee point, the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite offers Aeroplan points with a free checked bag and Nexus credit, which may be a better fit for Air Canada flyers.
