Earn rates
The Gold Visa earns at three rates. Travel booked through the CIBC Rewards Centre earns 2 Aventura Points per dollar; gas stations, EV charging, grocery stores and drug stores earn 1.5; everything else earns 1. These are the same rates as the Aventura Visa Infinite.
| Spending category | Earn rate | Points per $100 spent |
|---|---|---|
| Travel via CIBC Rewards Centre | 2x Aventura | 200 pts |
| Gas and EV charging | 1.5x Aventura | 150 pts |
| Grocery stores | 1.5x Aventura | 150 pts |
| Drug stores | 1.5x Aventura | 150 pts |
| Everything else | 1x Aventura | 100 pts |
Aventura Points are worth about 1¢ each on travel booked through the CIBC Rewards Centre. The Aventura Airline Rewards Chart prices flights in fixed point bands with a maximum ticket price per band, so a fare near the top of its band returns more; merchandise and statement credits return less. Points do not expire while the account is open.

Travel insurance on the CIBC Aventura Gold Visa
The CIBC Aventura Gold Visa scores 66 of 100 on the figures its certificate publishes, joint 28th of the 59 Canadian cards compared. Emergency medical is capped at $5,000,000 for trips up to 15 days. Coverage stops entirely at 65: not a smaller limit, nothing.
| Emergency medical | $5,000,000 · age 0–64: 15 days; age 65+: not covered · 90-day stability window |
|---|---|
| Flight or trip delay | $500 per person · after 4 hours · $500 per trip |
| Baggage delay | $500 per person · after 6 hours |
| Rental car collision or damage | Pays first · rentals to 48 days · vehicles to $85,000 |
You must charge 75% of the trip cost to the card for the coverage to apply. A booking made with points still qualifies. You have 90 days from the incident to report a claim. Dependent children are covered to age 21.

What the earn math looks like
A cardholder spending $2,500 per month, split across typical categories:
| Category | Monthly spend | Rate | Monthly points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Groceries | $600 | 1.5x | 900 pts |
| Gas | $200 | 1.5x | 300 pts |
| Drug store | $100 | 1.5x | 150 pts |
| All other spending | $1,600 | 1x | 1,600 pts |
| Total | $2,500 | 2,950 pts / mo |
35,400 Aventura Points per year from everyday spending at this mix, worth about $354 in Rewards Centre travel at 1¢ per point, before any travel booked through the centre at 2x. In the first year the welcome offer adds up to 35,000 points and the fee is rebated, so the card is well ahead; from year two the $139 fee takes a meaningful bite out of a $354 return, which is why the fee decides whether to keep it.
Good fit if
- Your household income is under the $60,000 personal / $100,000 household bar for the Visa Infinite and you want the same earn rates
- You want a travel card with no airline account, where points cover any airline including taxes
- You spend most on gas, groceries and drug stores and book travel through a bank portal anyway
Not sure this is the card for how you travel? Book a free conversation, or see membership plans for ongoing help.
Less useful if
- You qualify for the Aventura Visa Infinite: same fee, same earn, and the Visa Infinite benefit tier on top
- You want points that transfer to an airline program; Aventura is a closed currency worth about 1¢ on travel
- You rarely book travel and would rather hold a no-fee card, since the $139 fee returns from year two
