Earn rates

The card has two earn tiers. Eligible restaurants, transit, and gas stations earn 3x Membership Rewards per dollar, subject to a combined $25,000 annual cap across those categories. Once the cap is reached, spend in those categories drops to 1x for the remainder of the calendar year. All other eligible purchases earn 1x with no cap.

Spending category Earn rate Cap
Eligible restaurants 3x Membership Rewards $25,000/yr combined
Eligible transit (including rideshare) 3x Membership Rewards
Eligible gas stations and EV charging 3x Membership Rewards
Everything else 1x Membership Rewards None

The $25,000 annual cap across all elevated categories combined is roughly $2,083 per month. Most small businesses will stay under that threshold. Businesses with higher combined restaurant, transit, and fuel spend will hit the cap and earn at 1x above it.

Membership Rewards

Points earned on the Business Edge card go into the same Membership Rewards account as any other Amex MR card. They transfer to airline frequent flyer programs and hotel loyalty programs, or redeem at a minimum floor through Fixed Points Travel. The card does not include lounge access or hotel status — those belong to the Business Platinum — but the MR points it earns are the same currency and carry the same transfer optionality.

For a business primarily accumulating points to transfer to Aeroplan or a partner airline for premium redemptions, the Business Edge’s 3x on everyday categories can produce more points per year than the Business Platinum’s 1.25x flat rate, at a fraction of the fee.

Good fit if

  • Business expenses concentrate in restaurants, transit, and gas — the 3x rate applies to every dollar in those categories up to $25,000 combined annually.
  • You want transferable Membership Rewards points without paying for lounge access or hotel status you don’t use.
  • The $89 fee is easy to justify: a business spending $500/month on restaurants and transit alone earns ~18,000 points on those categories, worth ~$225 via Fixed Points Travel.

Less useful if

  • Business spend pushes elevated categories above $2,083/month — the $25,000 annual cap means the top rate no longer applies and incremental points from a flat-rate card may exceed what the Edge produces.
  • You want lounge access or hotel status benefits — the Business Platinum carries both and justifies its $799 fee through travel perks rather than earn rate.
  • Most business spending is outside the three elevated categories, making the 1x base rate uncompetitive with dedicated business cashback or higher-flat-rate alternatives.
