How the accelerator category system works

Three chosen categories at 1.5x, switchable every 90 days

At signup, you choose three accelerator categories that earn 1.5x Scene+ points. Every other purchase earns 1x. Unlike the Money-Back card's once-a-month change window, accelerator categories on this card can be switched every 90 days, which gives more room to match a quarter's travel or spending plans without losing the higher rate in between.

The 13 accelerator categories to choose from:

Groceries
Restaurants
Gas
Entertainment
Furniture
Hotel-motel
Drug store
Recurring bill payments
Home improvement
Public transportation & parking
E-gaming
Fitness & sports clubs
Foreign currency spend

This is the same 13-category list that the Tangerine Money-Back Card uses for its 2% cash back categories — Tangerine has standardized the category framework across its cash back and points products. The difference here is the currency: Scene+ points instead of cash, and 1.5x/1x rather than 2%/0.5%.

Earn rates

Category Earn rate Points per $100
Up to 3 chosen accelerator categories 1.5x Scene+ 150 pts
All other purchases 1x Scene+ 100 pts

At Scene+'s fixed 1¢/pt redemption value, that works out to a 1.5% return in your chosen categories and 1% on everything else. A cardholder spending $2,500 a month with $1,000 inside their three accelerator categories and $1,500 outside earns 1,500 + 1,500 = 3,000 points monthly, or 36,000 points a year — worth roughly $360 in Scene+ Travel redemptions, before the welcome bonus or annual spend bonus.

Welcome bonus and ongoing bonuses

New cardholders earn 30,000 Scene+ points (worth roughly $300 in travel redemptions) after spending $3,000 in net purchases within the first 3 months. The card also pays 10,000 bonus Scene+ points each year you spend $30,000 or more on the account — a bonus aimed squarely at high-spend households rather than occasional users.

How it compares to the Scotiabank Scene+ cards

The Scotiabank Gold American Express earns a flat 6x Scene+ points on groceries, dining, delivery, and entertainment for a $120 fee, with no foreign transaction fee. The Tangerine card cannot match that rate in its strongest categories, but it offers something the Gold Amex does not: full control over which three categories earn the bonus rate, including ones the Gold Amex does not accelerate at all, like gas, home improvement, and foreign currency spend. The choice comes down to whether your spending concentrates in the Gold Amex's fixed categories or is spread across categories the Tangerine card lets you choose. See the Scene+ program guide for the full card lineup and how points redeem.

Good fit if

  • Your top spending categories do not line up with the Scotiabank Gold Amex's fixed 6x categories, and you would rather pick your own three at 1.5x.
  • You already collect Scene+ points through grocery shopping at Sobeys or Safeway and want a card that adds to the same balance.
  • You travel enough to use four DragonPass lounge passes a year and want a $120-fee card that pays for itself in points plus lounge access.

Less useful if

  • You don't meet the $80,000 personal or $150,000 household income requirement: the no-fee Tangerine Money-Back Card uses the same category framework without an income gate.
  • Your spending concentrates in groceries, dining, and entertainment: the Scotiabank Gold Amex earns 6x Scene+ in those categories at the same $120 fee, well above this card's 1.5x ceiling.
  • You want a fixed-value cash return rather than a points currency to track and redeem: the Money-Back Card or Money-Back World Mastercard pay cash back monthly with no redemption step.
