Venture elite status

Venture is VIPorter’s only elite tier above the base level. Earning it through flights alone requires consistent Porter flying, and Porter’s network is concentrated in Eastern Canada and select transborder and leisure routes. The card bypasses that entirely.

Venture status at a glance
How to get it with this card
Automatic on approval. No spend requirement, no flight activity needed.
How to keep it
Maintain an open BMO VIPorter World Elite account.
Earn rate bonus
Venture members earn more VIPorter points per flight than Base members.
Fare benefits
Complimentary seat selection and access to preferred seating at check-in.
Boarding
Priority boarding on Porter-operated flights.
Check-in
Priority check-in lanes where available.

For infrequent Porter travellers, the card is the only practical way to hold Venture status. The per-flight earn bonus compounds on top of the card earn, so both the flight itself and the card spend at the airport earn at elevated rates.

Annual companion pass

The card grants one round-trip companion pass per year, giving a second traveller a 100% discount on base fares when you book and pay full price for your own ticket. There are no blackout dates, and the pass covers all Porter routes. The companion only pays taxes, fees, charges, and surcharges on their ticket.

You earn the pass by hitting an annual spend threshold: $9,000 in the first 180 days after account opening, then $50,000 in any 365-day period thereafter. Once earned, the pass is valid for 12 months before expiring. You can still travel after expiration as long as the booking was made before the pass expired and seat availability exists.

The VIPorter program

VIPorter points can be redeemed on Porter’s own network, on Air Transat through the joint venture partnership (locked through 2032), and on Alaska Airlines transborder itineraries that include a Porter segment. Domestic redemptions and the Air Transat transatlantic routes typically land around 1.5¢ per point.

Earn partners include JetBlue, Qatar Airways, Icelandair, and Azores Airlines, but these are earn-only. You can credit flights to your VIPorter account from those carriers, but cannot redeem points on them. The redemption universe is deliberately narrow, which is worth weighing against more transferable programs before committing.

Travel insurance

Coverage types included:

  • Emergency medical: out-of-province coverage
  • Trip cancellation: up to $1,500 per person
  • Trip interruption: up to $2,000 per person

  • Baggage delay: coverage for necessary purchases
  • Lost or stolen baggage: up to $500 per person

Coverage limits and eligibility conditions apply. Always review the certificate of insurance before travel, particularly the emergency medical eligibility and pre-existing condition exclusions.

Income requirement

The World Elite Mastercard requires a personal income of $80,000 or a household income of $150,000. This is the standard World Elite threshold, the same as most premium co-branded cards in Canada.

What the earn math looks like

A cardholder spending $2,500 per month, split across typical categories:

Category Monthly spend Rate Monthly points
Groceries $600 2x 1,200 pts
Gas $200 2x 400 pts
Dining $300 2x 600 pts
All other spending $1,400 1x 1,400 pts
Total $2,500 3,600 pts / mo

43,200 VIPorter points per year from everyday spending at this mix, before any Porter flight earn. At ~1.5¢ per point, that is approximately $648 in flight value annually. In year one, the fee is waived entirely. From year two onward, the $150 fee is the cost of both the earn and the Venture status benefit.

Who it suits

The card is the right choice for Porter regulars who want to hold Venture status without earning it through flying, and for anyone whose everyday categories align with the 2x tier. Groceries, gas, dining, and transit together cover a large share of most household spending, so the 2x rate has broad application even for people who do not fly Porter often.

It is less suited to travellers whose flights are primarily with Air Canada or WestJet, or who prefer the flexibility of a transferable points program. VIPorter points have a narrow redemption window compared to Aeroplan or Amex Membership Rewards, so cardholders who rarely fly Porter or Air Transat may find points harder to deploy at good value.
