Is CIBC Aventura worth it?

Depends on how you book travel. Strong fit if any of these apply:

  • You are a CIBC customer and want one card that earns and redeems in the same ecosystem
  • You book most flights through an online portal and want a higher per-point rate than statement-credit programs
  • You want a simple earn-and-burn cycle without managing a separate airline loyalty account

Less useful if your goal is premium cabin redemptions, transfer partners, or value beyond the ~1¢/pt ceiling the portal sets.

What can you redeem Aventura points for?

The Aventura Travel Assistant portal is the only redemption destination for full value. Search and book flights, hotels, vacation packages, and car rentals through the portal, applying points against the cost at approximately 1¢ per point for flights. The redemption structure is tiered by ticket cost, so as the price of a ticket increases, more points are required, but the per-point rate stays in a consistent range.

Statement credits against travel charges made outside the portal are available but yield roughly 0.5¢/pt. That is half the portal rate for the same balance.

Portal vs. statement credit. The Aventura Travel Assistant delivers roughly 2× the value of a statement credit redemption against the same travel charge. Book through the portal when possible. If you book outside CIBC for a specific fare or loyalty credit with an airline, the statement credit option is still available but at a meaningfully lower rate.

What is the best way to use Aventura points?

Domestic flights, sun-destination packages, and any booking where the portal has competitive fares. The value proposition is simplicity and a higher base redemption rate than fixed-value programs like TD Rewards. Aventura is not the right tool for business class to Europe or Asia. A transferable currency like Aeroplan or Amex Membership Rewards can return 2–4¢ per point on those routes. Aventura cannot exceed its ~1¢/pt ceiling.

Everything else 1.5 pts / $1 ~1.5%

CIBC Aventura Gold Visa

The entry-level card. Earns 1 point per dollar on all purchases with no category multipliers. No income requirement. The right option for cardholders who want access to the Aventura redemption system without the Visa Infinite eligibility requirements.

How does CIBC Aventura compare to TD Rewards?

These two programs target a similar audience: bank customers who want a straightforward earn-and-redeem travel cycle without managing a separate airline account. The key tradeoff is earn rate vs. per-point value. TD Rewards earns at up to 6 pts/$1 on groceries but each point is worth only 0.5¢ via Book Any Way. Aventura earns at 1.5 pts/$1 on groceries but each point is worth ~1¢ through the portal. The effective grocery return ends up close: TD at ~3.0%, Aventura at ~1.5%.

TD’s Book Any Way applies to any travel charge on your statement. No portal required, no inventory constraints. Aventura’s best rate requires booking through the CIBC portal. If you need to book directly with an airline for a specific fare class, loyalty status credit, or complex itinerary, TD’s flexibility may outweigh Aventura’s higher per-point rate.
