What it is like
This is ordinary air travel: drive to YVR, park, check a bag, clear security, and board a turboprop or small jet for a flight so short the seatbelt sign barely goes off. You land at a compact Island airport and then drive, taxi, or bus into town. The flying part is easy and quick. The friction is everything wrapped around it at both ends.
Airlines and airports
Several carriers serve the Island from YVR, and which one you take depends on where you are going. Victoria (YYJ) has the widest choice, with Air Canada, WestJet, Pacific Coastal, Flair, and Air North between them. Nanaimo (YCD) and Comox (YQQ) have fewer carriers. Campbell River (YBL) is served year-round by Pacific Coastal and is the gateway to the north Island and the coast. Tofino (YAZ) is seasonal. Check schedules with each airline.
What it costs
One-way fares range widely, roughly $60 to $250, depending on airline, route, and timing, with the budget carriers cheapest if you travel light. Add YVR parking, which is pricey, though the Island airports are cheap by comparison. Because the time cost is the real story here, weigh it against the harbour services in the value calculator on the main guide.
When flying wins
A regional flight earns its place in two situations. First, when you are connecting from another city and it is simplest to stay airside through to an Island airport. Second, when you are heading somewhere the ferries and floatplanes serve poorly, like Comox, Campbell River, or Tofino. For a straight trip from Vancouver to Victoria or Nanaimo, the harbour services usually beat it door to door.
Reliability
On reliability the flights do well, second only to Helijet. Larger aircraft and established carriers ride out weather that grounds the floatplanes, and small-runway and weather cancellations, while real, are uncommon. As always, leave a buffer if you are connecting onward.
Who it is for
Book it if
- You are connecting from another city through YVR.
- You are heading to Comox, Campbell River, or Tofino.
- You want established-carrier reliability.
Skip it if
- You are going straight to Victoria or Nanaimo and value door-to-door time.
- You want a downtown-to-downtown trip with no airport.
- YVR parking and security erase the appeal for you.
Booking tips
Match the airport to your destination, not just the city. Factor YVR parking and the Island-side transfer into the real cost. Budget fares reward travelling light, and as with everything across this water, give yourself slack if a connection depends on it.
How regional flights rank
On the main guide they sit mid-table. Strong on reliability, undone on convenience by the airport run at both ends.
