Cobalt split: 30% eats & drinks (5×, capped at the first $2,500/mo), 5% streaming (3×), 10% transit & gas (2×), 55% general (1×). Gold Rewards split: 45% travel, gas, grocery & drugstore (2×), 55% general (1×). Both cards earn Membership Rewards, which transfer to Avios 1:1, so 1 point earned equals 1 Avios toward Qsuite. Gold’s fee is shown net of its $100 annual travel credit. The 5× Cobalt cap begins to bite above roughly $8,300/mo in total spend at this mix.

How the Avios get there. Earn Membership Rewards on your Amex, then transfer them to Avios 1:1. Avios is a shared currency: the British Airways Club, Qatar Airways Privilege Club, Iberia, and Aer Lingus all use it, and you can move Avios between linked accounts at 1:1. Pool the Avios into Qatar Airways Privilege Club and book Qsuite there. Transfers are one-way and cannot be reversed, so confirm award space and price before you move points.
Off-peak is the whole game. Qatar prices Avios awards dynamically, with off-peak Saver dates far cheaper than peak. Off-peak Qsuite to Doha sits near 70,000 Avios each way; peak dates can run roughly a third higher, and fully flexible awards cost about double. Search a range of dates, target the off-peak calendar, and the numbers above hold. Qatar releases award space up to 361 days out, so booking early is how you find the saver seats.

Which card earns the Avios faster

Both cards earn Membership Rewards that transfer to Avios 1:1. The Cobalt is the everyday engine: a low monthly fee and the highest food-and-drink earn rate of any Canadian card. The Gold Rewards leans on travel and household categories, a larger welcome bonus, and a travel credit that offsets most of its fee.
