Booking ITA on Aeroplan
Why this partnership works, where to search, and what to expect
No carrier surcharges. ITA does not pass fuel surcharges (YQ) to Aeroplan redemptions. You pay government taxes only, roughly $250 one way. On Lufthansa or Swiss for the same route, surcharges add ~$500 on top of your points.
Why the direct route wins. YYZ-FCO is ITA's own nonstop from North America. Alternatives via Lufthansa, Swiss, or Austrian route through Frankfurt, Zurich, or Vienna, adding a connection and 3-5 hours, and all charge fuel surcharges. ITA skips both problems.
Where to search. Aeroplan.com, partner flights, ITA shows under airline code AZ. If your first date shows nothing, use the three-day flexible view. Business class inventory releases in batches, not continuously.
Book early. ITA opens Star Alliance partner award space up to 355 days in advance. Business class seats on the overnight to Rome sell out months ahead in summer. Booking 9-11 months out gives the best chance.
Rate note. Aeroplan repriced transatlantic partner business class roughly 20% in June 2026. Economy to Europe was unchanged. The ~80,000 pts business class figure uses the current post-repricing rate.

Cabin upgrades, lounge access, and what your card already includes
ITA business class on short-haul. ITA operates a business cabin on European routes, including Rome-Barcelona. Blocked middle seat or dedicated rows depending on aircraft, plus priority boarding and a full meal on a two-hour flight. Bookable via Aeroplan as a partner award. Check aeroplan.com for current intra-Europe partner business pricing.
Lounge before departure at Fiumicino. The ITA Airways Lounge at FCO Terminal 3 is open to ITA business class passengers and Star Alliance Gold members (Air Canada 35K Elite and above). TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege cardholders bring Priority Pass, which covers additional lounges across both FCO terminals.
Lounge on the return in Barcelona. El Prat Terminal 1 has Priority Pass lounges for the return leg. The same TD Privilege card covers both ends of the trip.
